Historic church

I have been talking about photographing this old church in the CBD of Krugersdorp for a while now. I always looked at the shots some of the participants on 365Project.org take of buildings and was convinced there was nothing similar around here. Great was my surprise when on my way to take the car in to be serviced I noticed this beatiful old building. This church is the place of worship for the congregations of the "Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk Krugersdorp and Krugerdorp-Noord" (The Dutch Reformed Church Krugersdorp and Krugersdorp North.) Despite an extensive search with the help of Mr Google I have not been able to establish how old the building is. The Krugersdorp congregation was established in 1891 and the Krugersdorp-North congregation in 1964 according to the official website of the "Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk". Unfortunately the property is fenced in and all the gates were locked so I was unable to search for a corner stone that might reveal this information.

A boy and his car

Monday Reuben and I made a heroic attempt to sort his room out. It is still not as sorted as I would like it to be it should be but there is a marked improvement. One of the fringe benefits of this exercise was the discovery of long forgotten toys. Reuben dug out this little remote controlled car and got Daddy to put new batteries in. He had great fun making it tumble and reverse all over the drive way. I loved the effect of the paving in this photograph.

"Cool kids"

Reuben had the kids next door over for a play date on Sunday. They had an absolute ball. This was their version of dressing up to look "cool".

Water lily - Nymphaeaceae

On Saturday Peter took the boys and I to Boomhuisie for breakfast. Reuben joined me taking photographs with his brand new camera he got for Christmas from his Ouma. He was the first to spot these water lilies. I initially thought they were fake but closer inspection revealed that they were the real thing.

Sempervivum Succulent
The common names and history of Sempervivum are as interesting as
the plant itself. Translated, Sempervivum means “always living,” or the
common name of live forever. A common European name, derived from the
practice of growing them on rooftops, is houseleek. In the United States
they are most commonly known as hens and chicks, though they are
sometimes called cats and kittens or even old man and old woman.
